Chapter History

Greenville (MS) Alumnae Chapter

The Greenville (MS) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, fondly known as GMAC, was chartered on January 27, 1980.  Charter members were Sorors Jacquator Bell, Janie Byas, Katie Hamilton, Georgia Hardmon, Sylvia Jackson, Nola Leggett, Alice Maddox, Barbara McCoy, Zana McKelphin McKinnie, Delores Rodgers, Patricia Trowles, Ann Watson, Comoleta Watts and Dorothy Ann Williams.

 

The chartering ceremony was held at the Greenville Senior Citizen’s Center.  Soror Kathleen Wright, Director of the Southern Region, performed the ceremony.  She provided the charter members with both information and inspiration.

 

Since GMAC’s inception, the chapter members began their diligent crusade to be a beacon of light in their service area. GMAC members have continued to work hard during its creation of several initiatives, social actions and partnership to improve the overall well-being of citizens in their community. 

 

During its years of service GMAC has participated in Census Issues, established yearly health fairs, partnered with local hospitals, MS State Department of Health, Delta Cotton Belles, and Keep Greenville Beautiful campaign.  GMAC continues to provide thanksgiving dinners and adopt families and children during the holidays. Senior Scholarships and book stipends are awarded each with the goal of increasing the more that can be given. 

 

Events such as Read Across America in the Greenville Mall to provide children with reading material and safe spaces to practice reading, Salvation Army Bell Ringing to raise funds for the community, were also additional opportunities to find a GMAC members at work.

 

During the COVID-19, sorors “Masked UP’ and continue to work to provide information on vaccination, provided virtual information about political issues, World’s Aids and a virtual cookbook.

 

In 2010, after hosting chapter meetings in several temporary locations, the chapter was able to purchase their permanent Chapter Home, fondly called “The Delta House”.  The Mortgage for the Delta House was burned in 2019.

 

GMAC has initiated 7 lines since its charter.  1981 Starlighters 9, 1988 14 Karats of Delta Gold 1996 24 Jewels of the Delta Nile; in 2002 14 Pearls of Wisdom; 2007 27 Crimsational Storms of DST;  2011 The Fierce, Fabulous Phenomenal 40; in 2019 ,31 Thunderous Torches of DeSTiny.

 

The members of the Greenville (MS) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta continue to diligently in the quest of our community and is committed to the standards of their founders..
